Learning How To Budget
A skill that is not taught enough in schools enough is that of budgeting. What's worse, many parents do not educate their children on this subject. And if the parents themselves have bad money management habits, the child may pick them up also. This is why it is imperative for all adults to learn how to budget. There are a variety of ways to do this, so you can choose what appeals most to you. Budgeting skills should be taught and practiced as soon as a child or teen has an allowance or job, so that they can enter adulthood with a firm grasp on handling their money. One way to keep a budget is on the computer. There are a wide variety of software products for both businesses and individuals. Some of them even allow you to pay your bills via Internet and helps automatically track incoming and outgoing funds.
If you enter all your income and outgoing money into a spreadsheet, carry a small notebook around with you so you don't miss small purchases. This might include a cup of coffee or a soft drink at the gas station. The little things often go overlooked and add up quickly. You can also do your budget on paper if you are more comfortable this way. Write down all your bills and various expenses and add them up, then compare the number to how much income you are bringing in. Here you will see that you either have money left over or are minus money. If you have money left over, think of the best way you can apply it to improve your life. If you are minus money, it's time to make some adjustments to your lifestyle.
This can be done by using less electricity, buying cheaper groceries, skipping that morning latte -- the possibilities for cutting costs are almost unlimited. An easy way to learn how to budget is to use what is referred to as the envelope system. When you get paid, cash your check and divide the cash among a number of envelopes, each one marked for a different purpose. For example, you might have an envelope for rent, one for utilities, one for groceries, one for personal spending and so on. Once the money is spent from a certain envelope, that's it and you cannot spend any more. It is important not to dip into another envelope, for example resist taking a few extra dollars from your credit card payment envelope for that new dress. Budgeting can be difficult at first but the more you practice it the more proficient you will become.
