Creating A Personal Budget Spreadsheet
If you don't keep track of your money, it is likely you are going to have problems with it. Of course, if you are rich beyond your wildest dreams this may not be an issue. However if that were the case I doubt you'd be reading this article. The vast majority of average citizens should have a personal budget spreadsheet, the easiest way to keep track of personal and household finances. You can use Excel, or even Google Documents spreadsheet which is a handy online version that can be accessed from any computer. There are home budget spreadsheet templates you might want to download to make things easier. These templates are already filled in with the various categories (which you can edit to suit your needs) and ready to do the calculations with only a click of the mouse.
It's a good idea to print each month's budget as well as a spreadsheet filled in with actual amounts, so you can see how close you were to your budget. It's great if you went under, although many people end up going over their budget and spending more than they have. You can keep weekly records or go for a monthly budget spreadsheet which gives you a look at the entire month. This is the most common method as many people tally up their income and expenses by the month to make things easier. If you know that something special is coming up, like a holiday or birthday, or something necessary like taxes, you can change the budget for one or more months to accommodate these expenses.
This might mean giving yourself less spending money for awhile or reducing your grocery bill. How to create a personal budget spreadsheet is something that should be taught as early as the pre-teen and teen years. While some schools do touch on the subject of money management parents can help also by showing teens how to keep track of their money. This can be used for their allowance, and of course when they get their first job. Through this type of spreadsheet system teens can see how much they are making, how much they are spending and learn how to set and reach financial goals. The earlier good money management techniques are taught, the more likely they will become second nature.
